Dear Sony, Shut up and Dance!

We all know that Sony dropped the ball with the PS3. Actually, they dropped a lot of balls lately. It must sound like a basketball court in Sony land. But is all lost? Does the PS3 and Sony have any hope left? Of course they do, but they may have to swallow their pride, admit some mistakes and set some things right first. So let’s take a look at what they can and cannot do.

Blu-ray. Too late to do anything about that besides a total recall which will not happen. They took a huge gamble with this, trying to force Blu-Ray on the masses and they should have known it’s not needed. Neither is HD-DVD in my opinion. DVD should have been the last optical media we needed. Hard drives and flash is big enough and almost cheap enough to do the job, just let us download everything already. Getting back on topic, PS3 are stuck with Blu-Ray and its high costs.

Content. Ultimately this is where all the decisions are made right? How many Xbox 360’s did Microsoft sell because of Gears of War? How many more will the sell when Halo 3 hits? With Sony having a year on Microsoft to get their dev tools and hardware right, they should be stomping all over the Xbox 360. But where are the games? When was the last time you even read about a PS3 game? With their competition already entrenched Sony needed to come out swinging hard. Instead they tripped and they are taking their sweet time to get back up. If they have any great content ready, they need to get it out now.

Hardware Scaler. The Sony hardware scaler really sucks. What? They did not include one? How the hell do you put out a system that is supposed to be ‘True-HD’ and not include that? Was cost the issue? Now the only way to fix it is through firmware updates, and doing it through software takes some of your CPU power away. Here is a quick solution. Get rid of the PS2 hardware (doesn’t work right anyway), emulate any PS2 games that people want to through software as it shouldn’t make a difference, and take that cost savings and put in a hardware scaler. You may even save some money that way and be able to help fix the next problem.

Price. I know it’s a vicious circle. They can only lower the price if they are making it up in software sales, developers won’t put out games because they are not selling enough consoles because of the high price and the launch problems. Well they have deep pockets and if they really wanted Blu-Ray to win this war they would drop the price and take more of a hit. It will even out later and they will control the HD standard, however long that lasts. Just lower the price, sell them like mad for a year because you need to catch up!

Public Relations. Talk about foot-in-mouth disease. What they hell is wrong with these people? Is anyone in charge over there? It’s time to implement a gag order with resulting termination if it is broken. Don’t say anything else. You will get better press by being silent than with what you have been doing. Just shut up and make some good games! No more interviews. No more fake blogs or websites or anything else. Shhhh.

A year and a half ago, Playstation was king. Actually, the PS2 would still qualify as the console leader right now. But the Playstation name is being dragged through a lot of mud. Sony needs to pick it up and clean it off before it becomes permanently stained.
