Just a wii little update…
It is early so that title actually amused me. Actually I consistantly amuse myself but that will have to wait for another post.
I know I have writen about my disappointment in the Wii before, but I also wanted to give it a fair chance before putting it up on ebay. I have rented and purchased many games from the first ones like red steel (horrible) up to Mario Kart Wii (great).
I have to say that my opinion of the Wii has not really changed. Of all the games that I have tried, the only good ones are the ‘party’ games. But I think that has more to do with the atmosphere of having a bunch of friends over. I don’t really see anyone playing Mario Party 8 by themselves.
I do not really want to group the Wii in with the other game consoles. It really is more of a toy than a game console. But I don’t see myself truly gaming on it, nor will I be buying any games for it except the party games.
I think Nintendo did exactly what it needed to do in order to make a ton of money and to try and bring back the glory days. But I do not think it will last. Non gamers that bought it will have no reason to buy the next version of the Wii, and real gamers will tire of it quickly and will also not upgrade to the next version. This is a toy, and people get bored with toys and move on to the next one.
I know people will say “but it has opened up gaming to a bunch of people that did not play games before!”. I say who cares? The games they make for old people or people that suck at games do not interest me. I am a real gamer, and once this fad goes away, it’s my money the game companies will be fighting for. I doubt much of it will be going to Nintendo in the future unless they start making a game console again, not a toy.

I agree, whole-heartedly. It’s a great casual gaming system, but as a gamer I’m way more interested in playing some real games. My Wii gets turned on at parties, but other than that it just kind of sits there. The odd game will come along that’s worth playing, but I get way more use out of my Xbox 360.
It’s kind of a shame. The Wii does have more potential, but when people are excited about really simple games on a simple machine, it’s good for Nintendo’s business to grab that low-hanging fruit.
And once they have all the low-hanging fruit, then where do they go? I want Nintendo to succeed, and they now have the cash to last a long time but they need to start doing something to appeal to me. I am the one that gave them my money all these years, and now they have abandoned all us loyal gamers so they can try the whole casual experience thing.
So what do you think would happen if Microsoft decided to make a motion controller as well? It would be interesting to see, but I think I’ll save that one for another post.
