Resident Evil 4 Review – Part 1 of many – Fighting
Resident Evil. Those are the two words that cause many like myself to salivate. This is the series that everyone has at least heard about. The best ‘movies created from a game’ were the resident evil movies. Now we are up to part 4 of the series. Note: I am fully aware of the other games like code veronica, I am just going by the numbers here, no need to pick everything apart. Being the foremost expert on Resident Evil, I thought I would tell you about RE4 (another note: yes, I really am the foremost expert on resident evil).
This part will be dedicated to the new fighting style. In Resident Evil 4, you play from a camera angle locked over your right shoulder, and this has some advantages, and disadvantages. As most RE fans know, the scene is usually set and you move whoever you happen to be playing until you get to a point where it changes to the next scene. This can sometimes be annoying when you can’t see ahead of you. Well now you can always see in front of you as you are playing through Leon’s eyes… well, you are kinda like a bird on his shoulder…
Anyway, one of the problems with this is that now you can only see in front of you and bad guys (or girls) have a nasty habit of coming at you from anywhere, not just the front. It can be frustrating when something attacks you when you can’t see them, but it also adds to the atmosphere of attempting to scare you.
As usual, you hold down the right shoulder button to draw your weapon. But guess what? Now you can aim it wherever you want! They even give you a cool laser sight to help your bullets find their mark. Wasn’t that nice of them? Also, before I forget, you also get your trusty knife with you and you don’t have to equip it. It’s now used by holding down the left shoulder button. Nice.
Ok, so now I can control my aiming it should be much easier right? Not really. The enemies are tougher, and much smarter. Smarter you say? How so? Well I never thought you’d ask. Here is a typical situation. Bad guy walking toward you with *insert weapon here* and looking like he wants to hurt you. You pull out gun and aim at his forehead. You fire and it knocks him back, but he shakes it off and continues towards you. You, getting annoyed at his unwillingness to die aim at his forehead again. You fire, but wait, he sidestepped and you hit nothing. WTF? You aim in the same spot again and this time he shields his head with his arms! This guy really doesn’t want to get shot in the head. They will do this at the worst times possible, especially if you are outnumbered and in a tight spot. Damn smart enemies.
Continuing on the enemies note, they are also much more fun to kill. They respond to where you happen to shot them. Shoot them in the face and they clutch their head in pain. Shoot them in the arm and the drop their weapon. Shoot them in the leg and they fall to their knee. Get it? Have fun shooting them in all kinds of places!
A few quick notes: Always reload after a battle. You can’t use the inventory screen to reload you guns anymore so always reload when you have the time. When you see a guy with a chainsaw running at you, don’t treat him lightly. It takes a lot to kill him and he can kill you easily. If there are a lot of enemies coming at you, shoot some in the leg to slow them down. Lastly, they like to throw axes and knives at you. You can shoot them out of the air. Get good at that as it will save your ass a lot.
That’s it for now, I will write the next part soon. If you don’t have this game, go buy you ass! You need it.
